Cynthie Fisher A Distant Drummer

A ruffed grouse surveys the forest floor in Cynthie Fisher's wildlife print A DISTANT DRUMMER.

The male grouse makes a noise called "drumming" which is actually the gamebird rapidly rotating his wings back and forth on a fallen log or rock. A drumming sequence last lasts 8–10 seconds, during which the wings may beat up to 50 times. The drumming noise starts slowly then builds to a speed where the wings are almost invisible.  Displays are most frequent just before and after sunrise. It is believed that the drumming is to warn other males to stay out of the drummer's territory, and to attract a mate.
