Derk Hansen Dawn's Early Light

A loon family is out for a swim in Derk Hansen's print Dawn's Early Light. It is estimated that these two adult loons and two chicks will consume half a ton of fish during their 12-15 weeks together. At that time, the parents leave the chicks and begin their migration south.  The juveniles join other young loons and begin their separate journey.  The young ones will not migrate back north for 2-3 years, and won't begin breeding until about the 6th year of their lives.  Loons live all their lives in the water, going on land only to mate and nest.
