In this Terry Redlin print a couple of cottontail rabbits are "HIGHTAILING" it across an open field heading toward cover, running as fast as 18 MPH.  They try to stay hidden during the day, coming out to feed mostly at night.  In winter they are often forced to feed on twigs and bark.

“In high gear and heading for cover in the nearby brush, this pair of cottontail rabbits would be only a blur to the casual observer. This familiar animal received its name from the fluffy, white underside of its tail which is apparent as these rabbits scamper away.”
